Last week NCWNZ, together with the White Ribbon Campaign, launched an online petition calling for Facebook to remove pages which promote sexual and other violence
against women. Unbelievably, Facebook allows these pages to remain online despite the fact that they violate the site's Terms of Service.
In the seven days that the petition has been live, 1,980 people have signed it! We hope to reach 2,000 by the end of today. Help us reach this milestone - if you
haven't already signed it, click on - www.ipetitions.com/petition/violenceagainstwomenonfacebook/ . You can keep track of how many signatures are on the petition (and see who has signed it) by clicking on the Signatures tab.
(Note: Once you have signed it, you will be taken to a page requesting donations. This is an ipetitions request generated automatically by the website- it is not an NCWNZ request so click the cross to get out of the page. Your signature has already been recorded).
We've had some good media coverage about the petition at national and local level including The Press, the Sunday - Star Times and the Southland Times.
We have also been approached by one of three other groups internationally pushing for Facebook to remove the pages. All four of us will be sharing information about our efforts and making a concerted push to achieve the desired result.
Action Items have been circulated for the Green Paper on Vulnerable Children, Reviewing the Family Court, and the Inquiry into Issues in the Aged Care Sector. You can find the questions and due dates for response for these Action Items in the Members Only section of our website and in the November Circular.
We've updated our NCWNZ brochure which sets out who we are, what we do and where people can go for more information. This afternoon we'll be uploading the brochure to the Member's Only section of the website so that you can run off copies as you need them.
The November Circular will be posted this Friday - it's the last issue for the year. The next Circular will be out in February 2012. We hope you'll send us a short piece we can include about some of the discussions you've been having on various issues, interesting speakers, and events (where possible with an accompanying photo). This often inspires others! Send these to ruththomson@ncwnz.org.nz by Friday 13 January 2012.
