Profiling young people making a difference in the Pressie Network.

Kathryn Grant is spending a gap year between high school and uni in the role of National Youth Ministry intern. She is involved in all sorts of exciting youthfocussed stuff happening in the Presbyterian Church. Read on to find out what she’s been up to over the last few months…

What does your role as PYM intern involve?

I work with the National Youth Co-ordinator Mo Mansill on national, regional and local projects. Nationally, we serve all the youth leaders in the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand . Regionally, we’re involved with Wellington events such as Easter Camps and the “Going Somewhere” discipleship course. Locally, I help with the youth group at Knox Church in Lower Hutt . Some of the projects that I’m involved with are Connect, PYM library, Fuel magazine, burning bush hoodies, and office-based admin work.

Who has inspired you as PYM intern?

The interns in 2003 and 2004, Jo Ryan and Monica Yeoman, both did great jobs and left their own stamp on PYM. Hopefully, I can make a difference in my time as intern, too. Mo is great to work with – she is constantly challenging and inspiring me. I’m also inspired by the people I meet who are living their faith.

Where have you seen people making a difference?

There are amazing people in the Pressie church all over New Zealand who are making a difference in their patch, big or small. Meeting youth leaders for the first time is always a buzz; I like hearing all about their ministry and what they are doing. They become so much more than a name on a page.

What have you learnt about God through your role this year?

Being able to spend time with so many on-to-it Christians has led to lots of discussions about what we believe and why. I’ve also had the opportunity to go to several events and hear some great speakers. Listening and learning from them has inspired me to explore my faith and what I believe.

What are you reading at the moment?

I’ve been reading quite a lot this year (it was my New Year’s resolution to read more books). I’ve just finished the Narnia series, which I was reading for the first time. I’m just about to finish The Invisible Table by Lloyd Martin. It has been really interesting reading it while working alongside him…

And finally, what’s been the best thing about your role so far this year?

The camps! I love camps, they’re always so much fun, and getting to meet so many amazing people from all around New Zealand . The amount of cool people in the Pressie tribe out there constantly surprises me; they just seem to be everywhere!
